Teaching Field ESL

1. In 2017 I taught English at Wittedrift High School in Plettenberg Bay, Western Cape, South Africa for Grade 8 – 11 learners; both First Additional Language and Home (First) Language groups. Subject matter: grammar, literature, poetry, letter writing, creative writing, speaking and pronunciation.

2. Previously I successfully taught English (grammar, business communication, conversational and writing skills, pronunciation, vocabulary, listening, reading and promotional writing and more) to trainee diplomat students (young adults) from mostly African countries as a consultant to E=MC² Training Consultants in Pretoria for over ten years. Student levels ranged from basic to advanced.

3. Whilst working on contract for the IAEA in Africa to help countries with peaceful nuclear applications market their nuclear skills, I also taught English to these scientists from April 2000 to 2015 on a part-time basis. I consulted on assisting them in promoting peaceful nuclear techniques and applications in various fields such as health, mining, geology, water management, agriculture and animal husbandry, forestation etc.

As English was the required medium of communication for most, the need arose to also acquire good English communication skills and I was called upon to teach grammar, business and marketing English, public speaking and interpersonal communication and interpersonal communications skills (Neuro-linguistic programming techniques.) This was part of the IAEA project completed in the past (and for which I am still on call from time to time.).

The work also called for teaching creative writing skills in English; copywriting of brochures and promotional material; video scripts, business communication and correspondence, writing strategic business and marketing plans, reports, advertisements, press releases. Students had to do practical work to apply the skills and were on various levels of proficiency. My last two missions were to Ghana in August 2014 and again in April 2016. The last mission to Ethiopia in 2018 was purely based on assisting with a marketing programme to eradicate tsetse fly and trypanosomiasis on the continent.

My IAEA contractual work also included training nuclear experts in aspects of management, strategic planning, marketing, communications, public relations and project management to enhance their skills in managing and promoting their nuclear projects for local economic development. Thus, I have several years’ experience as a trainer - both in SA for the Nuclear Energy Corporation of SA (NECSA) and abroad. My teacher/training experience stretches over 15 years.

I am culturally sensitive and highly resilient. My passion, dedication, energy and creativity are valuable qualities for teaching English. And what is more, I do not give up easily!

4. I have worked in Austria, Switzerland, Algeria, and Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Cameroon, DRC, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Namibia, Niger, Senegal, Sudan, South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda and Zambia.
